1994 Audi 80 car doesn't start

1994 Audi 80 6 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 180000 miles
Hi,
Audi cuts out after driving for about 15 minutes. Somedays it runs ok for about half an hour but after stopping and turning car off it doesn't start up again for about 30-60 minutes (if I'm lucky!) battery changed, altenator good, water pump new. Mechanic cannot find fault even after putting it through diagnostic check. Also FWIW the temperature gauge doesn't move-can this be related. Also engine was steamed cleaned not long ago- can that have affected the car causing these problems?? Please help it's driving me insane!
