Front differential

Transmission problem
1998 Acura RL 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 220000 miles

My car recently stop while I was driving on the expressway. It made a loud noise and it was not able to accelerate. I was able to start the engine but when I put it in gear it makes a terrible noise. The transmission company says its the front differential and not the tramsmission they just put in last March.
What are your thoughts. How much do you think it should cost to replace the differential? What is the likeness of it being the differential compared to the transmission? I appreciate your information. Thanks

Hi cgentry,

It most probably is the differential transfer shafts acting up.

If it is the trans, there would be no grinding noise when you shift into gears.
