I got a 97 Acura RL that I recently bought. When I put the car in reverse the tranmission shifts pretty hard, but not all the time. The car drives smooth, but also shifts "funny" while driving normally, but not all the time. I am concerned this is very bad and would result in an overhaul, but keeping my finger's crossed. Anyway, I hope you can give me some good news.

I have a 1997 RL that does the same thing. My mechanic tells me that the transmission mount is broken. He says that the mount itself is fairly inexpensive but the labor to change it is expensive. The transmission is held captive within the mount and it is not necessary to change it if you can live with the clunk. I've been waiting until I have an extra $400 and I'll have my mechanic change it. Hope that this helps.
