Starting a Toyota Yaris the right way

Hello, Just got a friends car for an emergency trip. Having problem with starting it. Its toyota yaris. Difficulty starting the engine and releasing the handbrake. It is a manual. And I am used to automatic cars. Please help.

You need to have the brake pedal to crank the engine.

What is the problem you have with starting?

thank you. It did work. I had to press the clutch pedal all the way down, completely down to be able to start the engine and then in releasing the handbrake, I had to pull the handbrake up slightly before pressing the knob and then pressing the lever down. I got all this in the manual. Thank you.
