2009 Honda Pilot - oil changes

OK, I'm a woman and I think I just got the shaft. I brought my car in for an oil change at a "chain repair shop". He asked if I wanted to have a regular oil change or synthetic and asked how many miles I would drive before changing it again. I said, "I drive about 7,500 miles...the recommended time by the maintenance minder." He said I should use the synthetic oil and now I can drive up to 8500-9000 miles until the next oil change. What do you guys think??
He also mentioned after changing the oil that it was dark and a little low.

Do not use the synth oil if it has not been used in this engine, do you know what grade was used? and keep the oil changes at around 5,000 mls as well.
