2008 Mazda 5 GT rear breaks

I am trying to replace the rear brakes on my 2008 Mazda5 Grand Touring. For some reason, the piston in the brake caliper will not push back. I am not using a C-clamp because it is hooked to an emergency brake system. I thought you were supposed to turn and push the piston until it was flush. What am I doing wrong?
