Overheating

Car on highway has been overheating on long road trips. I have plenty of coolant and the thermometer guage stays in middle of H and C. Im not sure whats happening or why. My car will slow down at a certain speed and the guage will show the heat rising

Has the engine actually overheated? As far as the slowing down, the computer will shut the engine down if it thinks it is overheating.

The reason I question if it overheated is because it may deal with the temp sending unit. It may show hot, but the engine may not actually be hot.

Thats what the gauge with the H and C level showed, that it was at normal temp, but the temp light went on and the car slowed down. Im a little worried this car has given me so much crap Im so tired of it all!

Since the engine isn't actually overheating, I believe you have a bad temperature sending unit. What happens is this. If the computer thinks the engine is overheating, it will shut things down to trying to eliminate the problem.

A sending unit should be under 20.00 and all you do is unscrew the old one and screw the new one in its place.

Don't worry about the questions. That is why I'm here. Our online manual shows the same pictures for all 3 engines ( 1.8L, 2.0L, 2.4L )

Here's a guide to read on changing the coolant sensor in a car. Its not vehicle specific, but it will give you an idea of what is involved

When I am idling or in heavy traffic in summer car temperature wil rise, but as soon as I am driving normal, will go back to normal, in winter does not do this

Four days ago my caliber started over heating. I checked the thermostat seemed to be fine, I replaced the fuse for the fans and changed the radiator cap, because the seal was cracked. I am at a loss of what else to do, I can drive about 2 miles and it begins to overheat, when I turn on the heat the temp goes back down to normal, also the engine is making a ticking sound, please don't tell me its the alternator. Any suggestions as to what else to look at? Thanks

If not on possible reasons are temp sensor, relay or fan motor. Warm engine to operating temp fans come on at 190 -200 if not test for voltage at fan

By check tstat did you replace it? Make sure coolant is full then have pressure checked for internal leaks. If you are turning the heat on it may be an electrical issue have a pro manually check the temp while it is overheating

Did not replace the tstat, tested it and it opened like it should.
