How do we figure out what is wrong with the fan?

We were driving home tonight, the windshield fogged up, we turned on the fan, we heard a weird noise like a prolonged squeak and the fan quit running. The heat is one, just no fan to blow the air. Is there a fuse or a sensor a novice could replace?

I feel like such a goof (yes, I am a woman) - our car is an automatic and no we do not have a multimeter. I did check the fuses and it is not the fuses. That was the only solution that the car manual offered.

So the ac is auto climate control where you dial in the temp? Also you will need a multimeter and if it has auto climate control you will have to have the ac scanned for codes. By a shop that has a scan tool that can scan your ac computer.
