My son gave a jump on his 2007 chevy cobalt and hooked the jumper cables to the fuse box instead of the battery now the engine light is on the pwer steering and is revving up like the transmission is not going into gear

You need to go to auto part's store like auto zone and have them scan your car for code's and let me know the exact code number's. Also check your fuses in the under hood fuse box you more then likely have a fuse or a couple of blown fuse's from that jump start.

I took it to the auto parts store and the code is u0101

I looked this up online and got answer This generic "U" code applies to all car makers and indicates that the PCM has lost communication with the transmission control module (TCM). This is usually the result of a problem on the data line linking the modules. Can you give me an idea of the cost to fix this?

Have you checked the fuse's yet?You said this all happened since the jump start so the first thing you need to do is check all the fuse's. Because it's very likely the jump start blew some fuse's. Let me know what you find.
