Replaced head gasket, do pistons have to be at tdc for car to start?

Some of the pistons are halfway down and some are all the way up

How do you want them to be, all up at the same time? Only the number one piston must be at top dead center, and the camshaft(s) sprockets must be lined up with the timing marks when the timing chain is installed.
