What is causing a thumping noise in the rear of my car when i put the brakes on?

I hear a thumpong noise in the rear of my car when i put my brakes on. any idea what it may be? if i put them on easy i hear it. if i put them on hard it doesn't seem to be as bad

Sounds like the brake shoes are walking if you have rear drum brakes?
