When I start the car and step on brake pedal and try to shift from park the shift lever will not move from park I have to depress the manual release to shift it.

Check your brake lights, are they coming on when you press the pedal? If not he brake light switch could be bad not triggering the shift lock solenoid. Check the fuses in the diagrams below to make sure you did not pop a fuse.

Some of these have a cable that may need adjustment or replacement. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

I did check and found a bad cable as you recommended, replaced it and it seems to be working fine. Thanks so much.
