Hello. I am thinking about buying a 96 chevy cavalier on craigslist and know nothing about cars. The girl said the ground wire is lose and the light flicker in the car. Is this an easy cheap fix or does this entail future problems? The claims the car runs fine otherwise. Any advice on what to look for when buying a used car would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Ok. Being that the ar is a 1996, there is going to be some problems, so you need to have a mechanic to check it BEFORE you make the purchase!

The flickeing lights could be caused by an alternator/charging system problem, a loose ground (unlikely - because to fix a loose ground you only have to clean it and tighten it up), a loose belt (caused by a faulty belt tensioner).

There cars often leak fuel at the base of the injectors (bad injector seal about $1 for the part). Check for oil leaks (rear & front crankshaft seals, valve cover). Listen for hub bearing noise as you drive around 20 - 45 mph.

There is always a long list of things to check when buying a car, but these are some of the most important, as far as usual problems that these cars have.
