My car was in an accident and now there is a gap between the cv half shaft and the transmission and there is some play in it, there is also a rattle coming from underneath when I go over bumps at at angle. Could the half shaft be bad and have been caused by the accident?

Some half shafts have retainer clips that lock it into trans. If that has come loose you may be able to pop it back in and be fine. The inner cv joint is suppose to have in and out play to it to allow for car/suspension geometry changes while driving. If however your suspension/frame is dorked, you will likely have to deal with that first.
