I would check the Fuel Pump relay. You can do this but it often takes 2 people. When the key is turned to the, "ON" position the relay turns on the pump for 2 seconds to prime the system. So, have 1 person on the drivers side listen for, "whirring" noise while crouching near gas tank. While they are listening, turn the key to the, "ON" position and they should hear the pump turn for about 2 seconds. If they don't hear it, the relay is probably bad and needs replacement.
