Why both keys not functioning the central locking

Hi, this is Lino. I own a 2005 Mercedes SLK 200K. A few days ago when I pressed the key to open the car it did not work, so I bought two batteries to replace the old once. The central lock and the booth opener still did not work when I pressed the key. I even tried my spare key just in case, but no luck. I have a bottom inside the car to open the central lock and works fine. Only by pressing the key it does not work. In turn, the alarm is not triggered on. It is a hassle to open and close the car with the little metal key attached with the electronic key and besides that the alarm in never on. Do you have an idea what the problem might be?
Thank you and regards,
Lino from Malta
