what is causing the problem listed below

I was driving down the highway when the car started to buck like it was not getting gas. I pulled over turned the car off and then started again. I was able to drive the car back home but only at 25mph if i tried to go faster it would buck and try to stop moving. the engine was not trying to go off, it just could not go over 25mph
