My Civic stopped blowing heat in the winter and months later it overheated for the first and only time, while my wife was driving! I went to pick the car up from expressway, let it cool off and began to drive it home. As I drove, about 5-10 minutes into it the overflow tank bubbled and blew off its cap and started steaming up again. I made it home with the car, checked and refilled all necessary fluids and it was fine, parked for a few days (accidentally left radiator cap OFF). My daughter came from school and unknowingly drove the car for a few hours. Now it won't start at all. Just struggles. Sounds like it wants to, but can't. What could this be? Please help!

If the cat won't start is there any sure signs that I could personally look at by myself to tell if its the head gasket? I was really hoping it was the water pump and timing chain! Don't want to get ripped off at the shop. I checked the oil cap for signs of water or discolorization and saw a brand new looking cap. The are water marks on the hood above where the water pump and timing chain is. Looks like it was being thrown in a uniform pattern and theres a hose above that where the foam has released itself.

It could be a gasket blown on aware pump or hose but to check a timing chain you need to pull offsome parts in front of engine to see if marks are lined up. Pull spark plugs and see if any are wet and if they feel like anti freeze. See pic this is where cam should be with engine on tdc. If it is a bad timing belt it may be an interfernence engine and if it is then it possibly bent valves. This pic is off a 1.7L as you didn't give engine size. Also if belt is bad / broken replace with a kit which includes water pump and pulleys etc.
