VIBRATION DAMPER
REMOVAL

Disconnect negative battery cable.
Raise vehicle on hoist.
Remove right front wheel and belt splash shield.
Remove accessory drive belts.
Remove damper bolt.

Remove damper by using Special Tools 8194 Insert and 8454 Puller (Fig. 79).

INSTALLATION

Install damper using Special Tools 8179 Screw, with Nut and Thrust Bearing from 6792, and 6792-1 Installer (Fig. 80).
Install damper center bolt. Tighten center bolt to 170 Nm (125 ft. lbs.) .
Install accessory drive belts.
Install belt splash shield and right front wheel.
Lower vehicle.
Connect negative battery cable.

I was driving in to work today, and about 4-5 miles before I got here. I noticed a very loud rattle. As the RPM's went up the rattle sped up, as well got louder. If I took my foot off the gas and coasted it would almost go away. Where should I start looking? How much should I be expecting this to cost? I've read through quite a few posts here and seem to think it could either be the harmonic balancer, or the timing belt. Either of which won't be to easy to get looked at, and fixed. I appreciate any help you give me! God Bless!

Forget about the guesses. It is engine related and we have only your word without hearing it. You need a trained ear to listen and point you in the right direction. Did you check the oil?

It sounds like it's coming from inside the timing chain cover area. So any pointers on where/what to look for/at? Going to have it towed home once I get off. =/

The outer ring fell off the harmonic balancer. We put it back on, is that ok or do I need to replace it?

Definitely replace it. No need to have it come off again while driving, sending shrapnel through the engine!

There is a band of rubber sandwiched under that outer ring. The purpose of that ring is to dampen out crankshaft oscillations. In real severe conditions, such as very high rpm and load, the crankshaft can twist and bend slightly resulting in a broken crank. More importantly, many engines are "externally balanced" meaning that when they were cast, it was very difficult to cast in two of the counterbalance weights, so they put them on the harmonic balancer and on the torque converter or flywheel. If the ring is not in the correct position on the hub, severe engine vibration will result. You might not actually feel the vibration, but the crankshaft will sure feel it.

Ford has a lot of trouble with the outer ring shifting position resulting in running problems because they include a position sensor in it. With Chrysler vehicles, the most common cause of the ring coming off is incorrect removal tools and procedures. The damper puller must be threaded into the holes designed for the purpose. If a jaw-type puller is used, the jaws must pull on the center hub, never on the outer ring.

A large selection of replacement dampers are available at some of the parts stores, otherwise you can find them at the local salvage yard. Be sure to find one from the same engine size and model year.

I have a guy fixing my water pump on my car because it was leaking antifreeze like crazy. In the process of fixing my water pump, he broke the balancer. He got a new one, but is having a hard time removing the one he broke. I am unsure as to what a balancer is and what it does? Is this a difficult problem to fix?

Need a puller should not be hard to get off. Yes it is important without crank will fatigue and break.
I would be a little leary of a guy who breaks a balance and then can't figure out how to remove. That's probably how it got broke in the first place.

Don't need a puller. Insert the biggest screwdriver you can find through one of the opening in the pulley to keep it from moving, and use a proper size socket and breaker bar to loosen the nut. Do not lose the washer behind the pulley.

You use a small 3 jaw wheel puller. DO NOT use a large puller on the outer ring of the Harmonic balancer as you will pull the outer ring off of the inner ring and ruin it. The jaws should be able to go through the cutouts in the balancer.

Advance Auto will give you that puller free on loan but I needed a 6 inch straight piece of metal rod to use also its not that hard but check hayes manual
