Driver side drive axle inner boot is rotating while car is in neutral

I was making a left turn and heard a loud noise and the car stopped accelerating and rpms went up. My car will not take off in any gear or stall. Shaft is loose on the trans side. The inner boot will rotate when car is running and in neutral or any gear for that matter but stops when clutch pedal is pressed in and car will not move or stall when in gear and clutch released.

Do you think it would be worth a shot to replace the axle? I'm hoping the tripod is worn out or bad.

Not sure if this helps but I removed the lower ball joint and tie rod and the axle nut freein the axle from the wheel and pushed the shaft back into the trans and started the ca put it in gear and slowly released the clutch and the shaft spun like it should but when I reconnected the shaft to the hub and ball joint and tie rod the shaft wouldnt spin and went back to rotating as it did before.

Just to add to this one you have to remove the axle completly out of the car and pop the boots loose to see if the axle joints are damaged.

Those axles usually come out pretty easy with a large pry bar between the axle and transmission case.
