I bought a 2004 Saturn ION level 2 coupe, used from a dealership in my neighborhood. I have had no problems for the past 2 years, however I have put 40000 miles, approximately and I have not had a fluid change or flush. I took it to a shop and they said that they did not recommend getting it changed or flushed for fear of the transmission not working afterwards. However, they did say that the oil was discolored and recommended changing it (I am sure this was just to make money, and not taking my best interest into consideration). My car has been having trouble changing gears and shuddering when I put it into reverse and when I change into drive for a few seconds. I do not know, since I bought it used, how long it has been since it was flushed or changed. So my question is, Should I or should I not get it changed or flushed? If so, which one?

Have a trans guy take a look at it and give his opinion. Most mechanics do most other parts of car. But from the shuddering it could be a clutch pak going bad or torque converter. The newer fluids will not hurt to be changed at the mileage you have given in the older cars yes but the newer cars which use the newer type fluid no harm comes form a change and if it's discolored is not a good sign especially if it's dark brown or black. The trans guy will probably scan for codes as well. They know best as they deal with it on a steady basis and specialize in them.
