Car noises

I have a 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander with 100,000 miles. For the past several weeks, I have noticed a noise that sounds like a vibration or a rattling. This noise happens when I am coasting between 40mph and 50mph. Above or below that, no noise. When I put my foot on the accelerator or brake, it goes away. I most often notice this noise in traffic. The noise sounds like it is coming from under the center of the dashboard.

What's going on? Is this a serious problem?

Intermittent noises are usually not serious unless they becomes constant and more pronounced.

Diagnosing noise problems without the physical vehicle is making wild guesses unless you are able to describe the noise in very minute details. You would need someone to have a look at it.
