My car is having difficulty starting, the check engine light is on

It's having difficulty changing gears. What's wrong? I got my car's ignition to turn over and while it tried to start, it took it several minutes to do so. Once I got on the highway, my car had difficulty changing gears even though I had it in drive.

Once I got the car up to 3,000 rpm it finally changed gears. My check engine light also came on and hasn't gone off.

Since the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned for trouble codes. Most parts stores will do it for free.

Alright. Would that help determine what's causing the transmission to not want to change gears?

There may be transmission trouble codes stored too.
