What is the smell coming from around the engine in my Intrepid?

I have a 2004 Intrepid with the 2.7, and after I drive it a long distance or go fast, the engine area smells like a burning rubber/smoke smell. I have noticed that I need a new serpentine belt, which I will get replaced as soon as I can. Could that be the smell? The car runs and idles fine otherwise.
