2004 Citroen Xsara Repair Question

Citroen Xsara Noise Problem
I have a Citreon Xsara 2.0 Diesel Estate I have a regular whineing noise which appears to be from the rear of the car.but am not sure what it can be The noise stops when I depress the clutch and free wheel so I suspect some kind of transmission problem. Any ideas?
