2004 Chevrolet Venture • 6 cylinder FWD Automatic • 175,000 miles

I have a 2004 Chevy Venture. The speedometer is not working properly (needle goes eratically and in steps up and sometimes stops without going back) and as I am not in position to take it to the GM dealer (remote location overseas) I wonder if it is possible to replace the step motor as I suspect it is with a used one (I'll try to buy used instrument cluster panel and remove the step motor from it) without having troubles with onboard computer and antitheft system. If so what are the (safety) guidelines? Thanks
