There is a metal clanging noise periodically from the engine. I'm being told it is the casing for the catalytic convertor, so it is not a warranty item. Does it make sense to replace this casing?

If the cat has collapsed, it must be replaced as a unit, you can't just do the housing.

Thanks Mark, but I may not have described this correctly - I should have said that I'm being told to replace the "shield". I assume they mean heat shield.
Does that make sense?

If there is a cracked or broken heat shield, this can be replaced, just make suer that it attach bolts just have not come loose.
