2003 Skoda Octavia Repair Question

When turning ignition key all lights display normally but the starter doesn't turn.
Also when driving sometimes the car will lose power in a jerky way for a few seconds make grinding clunking noises and then comes back to normal. If I stop accelerating the noise stops.
