2003 Saturn L200 Repair Question

What is suppose to be pluged in between the rear tiresof a saturn l200
When i went for inspection under a metal plate between the rear tires there is a space where it looks like something belongs pluged in I do not ever remember if there was something there or not mechanic said there should be but he does not know what i am thinking a sensor of some kind but i would like to know for sure

I cant think of anything like that under a plate?This is under the car?If it was a sensor and wasnt there then the computer would set a code for that.Under the plate there is a compartment for something to fit in there?
