Engine fan stays on?

Just had a fuel pump installed yesterday. I heard a whirring noise on the way home. I discovered the engine cooling fan will not shut off unless I turn off the ignition. I tried again this morning, same thing, fan keeps running. Help.

It sounds like the relay is stuck on here is the location in the diagrams below.

Try this first over by your battery you should see a black box that is your cooling fan relay module it has some good size wire's going to it.With the fans running and not turning off take a good size screwdriver use the handle and tap on the top of the relay module if the fans turn off you have a bad relay module.That's what usually cause's the fans to stay on.If it doesn't turn the fan's off taping on it then go have your car scanned for code's at a auto parts store like auto zone before you start the trouble tree i posted.The code's might give you a starting point.

When car is running engine fan won't shut off. When I pulled the fuse for it then it shut off. Is the fuse the problem. Just had the fuel pump replaced and than this problem started. Do I have to check anything else like the relay or heat sensor

There is a plastic fan relay box over by the battery try tapping on the top of it with a screwdriver handle to see if the fan turns off?Those relays stick and keep the fan on. That is the number one reason I have seen those fans stay on. If its sticking you need a new one.

I went to start my car the other day and the engine fan is on full blast, it never shuts off. And the engine is not overheating. What do I do to correct this? Please advise. Oh, the antifreeze is okay as well as the oil, I checked them both.

I would donate more, but rightnow I am really broke.

Hello SLHOLLOWAY,

Its sounds like the fan relay is stuck and needs replacement. Here are some diagrams to help you figure out which one to replace. Turn the key on then remove the relays one at a time.

Has the temp light on the dash come on at all or anytime?

I have attached some info on the operation of the fans for your info

After you check for codes, let me know... It is possible your engine coolant temp sensor is not working correctly.

COOLANT TEMP GAUGE - The PCM controls the coolant temperature gauge by sending gauge position messages to the BCM over the Class II link based on ECT sensor readings. The BCM averages the temperature over time allowing the gauge to move slowly and remain in a relatively stable position as temperature varies. The BCM then sends the averaged information to the I/P cluster over the link to position the gauge.

COOLANT TEMPERATURE TELLTALE - The Coolant Temperature telltale is used to alert the driver that the engine may be in an overheated condition. The PCM controls the Coolant Temperature telltale by sending a message to the BCM, which sends a message to the I/P cluster over the Class II link to turn On the telltale. The PCM will send the message when the ECT sensor reading is above 118 °C (244 °F). If this condition exists, the PCM will set DTC P0217. If a high temp/low voltage fault exists in the ECT sensor circuit, the signal is considered invalid and the Coolant Temperature telltale will NOT be illuminated. The cooling fans will be commanded On high.

Engine fan is always running when car is on service engine light on.
Had module (contains relay switches) replaced. This module is next to battery. Worked for awhile, however fan is on again, service engine light on again. Heater/defrost doesn't get warm
because fan is blowing. Any ideas what it could be. Car does not overheat.

So you had the fan relay box replaced?If you raise the engine rpm's up does the fan's turn off after a little while with the rpm's raised?Your timing chain could have jumped time.

Just to add to this one the relay's are in a module on a bracket right next to the battery can't miss them. Pretty common for them to go bad and keep the fan running. Try smacking the relay housing with a screwdriver and see if the fans go off. It's most likely the relay's being bad.

The fan on the engine started running a little fast and now it is running real fast even when it is first started in the morning?

Under the hood in the power distribution box, there are relays. Locate the one for the fan and remove it. Does the fan still continue to run? If not, try switching that relay with another one with the same part number to see if that fixes the problem. If it does, replace the original relay with a new one. It sounds like the relay has shorted out internally to me.
