2003 Peugeot 307 Repair Question

Peugeot 307 Smell Problem
Diesel model 307 Tdi UK
I am getting what smells like combustion fumes being blown in by the heater unit from the engine (where it also smells strongly).
The smell in the car stops when I put heater on recirculate ( but still smellsstrongly under bonnet).
Is this leaking exhaust gasses from the Turbochrager unit. If not any suggestions please
