Mercedes Benz 500sl Battery Problem
Is there a problem using aftermarket batteries for the front (auxiliary) battery under the hood

No not at all, just as long as it is the same dimensions and style i.e these normally use a DIN type battery these have the terminals post lower than other batteries.
