I'm trying to get my 2003 Taurus to start.

It was running fine and all the sudden after sitting for only about 1/2 hour, the car started, ran rough for a minute and died, it started again and ran for about 30 seconds and died and wouldn't start again.

Here's what I've done so far:
- Changed out the Fuel Filter (I had assumed since I bought this car at a dealer a year or so ago that they would have changed the fuel filter, oil etc. before putting it on the lot, the filter was OEM and the fuel coming out of it looked almost like dirty oil it was so dark)

- Changed out the Fuel Pump, I can hear the fuel pump prime now but still doesn't seem to be getting fuel to the injectors somehow. (couldn't hear the pump priming and after seeing how filthy the filter was, I assume it burned out the fuel pump)

- Checked for power and pulse at the electrical plug in at the injectors, both of those tests came out that there was both power and when cranking there was a pulse going to the injectors.

We thought maybe, since it only had 1/4 tank of gas when replacing the pump, there may be an issue with the gasoline being diluted or just dirty and not being able to gain ignition in the combustion chamber. We added another 5 gallons on top of that along with an STP Octane boost.

We still can't get the car to start and I'm at a loss as to what else it might be, we did get a can of starting fluid and the car will start with the starting fluid, it just won't stay running once the starting fluid is not being used.

Thank you,
Scott

Yes, I had checked for spark, and not watching where my hands were at the time I not only saw the spark, but accidentally touched the car and grounded myself and felt the spark, lol.

The car will start and run with starting fluid being pulse sprayed into the intake manifold, but as soon as you pull the starting fluid away it will conk out.

So, I have spark, the electrical connections to the injectors have power and pulse when checked with a test light, we have got a half tank of gas. I am almost wondering, even though the fuel pump is new if it is not bad, I can hear it prime, but it is a little louder than the old one was before it quit on me, so I am going to take the gas line off the front of the fuel filter and prime the pump to make sure that it is getting fuel through the filter to the engine and not just sitting there making noise.

Although I was a ASE Master Certified mechanic by profession for nearly fifteen years, it has been a good fifteen years since I changed careers and have been working in the engineering industry so the brain and troubleshooting skills are a little rusty . So any advice or input as to how I might be able to rectify this and get my car running again would definitely be appreciated.

I have been a "self certified rear lawn/ two car garage vehicle service technician" Many years, the "two car garage certification" came about five years ago!

I am more into CJs and older Fords.

Saw you had been sitting, so I thought I might get things rolling for someone!

Fuel pressure?

I use my oil pressure test gauge with the end changed out!

Whatever works

Whatever is inexpensive!

That is something I guess I did not think about. Once I check to see if the fuel pump is actually working (i.e. removing the line from the front of the fuel filter and see if it puts out fuel when the pump "primes" then I will know if I do not just have a bad pump and get the joys of doing a flat back removal of the tank to get the fuel pump out again.
I do appreciate your input and advice and I am hoping if not tonight then by tomorrow evening I will be able to get this beast on the road again.

If it is working I will dig into the bottom of one of my boxes and find my pressure gauge and check the pressure. Thanks again. :)
