2003 Buick Rendezvous Repair Question

Buick Rendezvous Engine Problem
My car started to make a knocking sound while in idle, when i stop or just sit it will stall out.

is it engine related???
did you check the oil or run it low????

I checked the oil, and it was about a quart low. But kept doing it. Took to a mechanic and they said it was the cylinder ( never heard of that before). They say i need a new engine or jiffy buy a new car.
