After switching the car off it will not start or even turn over, I just get insp in the dash. I tried jump leads & still nothing so I'm sure it's not the battery

Have you checked battery terminals to make sure they are clean and tight? Have you had the starter itself checked?

You can remove the starter and have it bench tested, but my concern is that since the problem doesn't happen all the time, it may test good. Therefore, when this happens, get a helper to turn the key to the start position while you check for power to the smaller wire on the starter. You should get 12v. If you do and the starter doesn't engage, it is most likely bad.
