2002 Toyota Highlander Repair Question

Topics covered: Engine, Clutch, Rpm.
Mileage: 125,000 miles.

Asked on August 27, 2011

As driving around 25mph, heard sound as if something fell down below the car. A knocking sound immediately began after that. Any ideas?

On further investigation it seems like the sound is coming from the general area of the belts but not created by the belts. As the car idles it is a steady knock but if you rev the engine or put it in gear the sound speeds up or slows down depending on the engine RPM and auto-clutch.

Check the crankpulley, note if it is moving in a wavy manner. If yes, the harmonic damper is bad.

Is it something that can be driven with to the shop or am I going to have to have it towed? 5 mile drive?

If the damper is not waving too badly, it is still driveable but do not turn on the A/C if you must.
