No first gear but rest of the gears work

I have a renualt Laguna 2ltr 2002. My first gear wont work as if it doesnt exist.. all the other gears work fine, RAC guy had a look and said everything seems to look fine externally needs to be looked at internal problem possibly.. what kind of problem has my car got?
