I have a 2002 lexus ES300, I changed the timing belt, I drove the car for three days. Tehn the check engine light came on. The trouble code came up P1436. I had a mechanic check on that code and it tells him its the variable timing sensor. I pulled that sensor out and put it back in. That check engine light went off. I drove 600 miles. The light came back on and the same code came up again P1436. Should I change that sensor?

You could check the ohms (VOM) against anew one as we dont' have the info on that and feel if it is sticky when it works, like hanging up or not.

I believe you have the code wrong. It should be P1663.

This code can occur when the solenoid gets stuck due to lubrication problems. If engine oil is heavily sludged, replacing the solenoid is not going to help and you need to clean the passage where the solenoid is plugged in.

One more thing, recheck your timing belt. If the belt had been installed out of time, the code would be triggerred.

I removed the timing belt again, and re-installed. 600 miles later that code P1436 came up again. That code still coming up P1436 now. Mechanic has this program that says its the variable timing sensor in bank 1. Closes to the fire wall. I removed the sensor and looked at it and put it right back. Check engine light turn off. It came back on 600 miles later. I never diconnected the battery cable when I took the sensor off. If that means anything to anyone out there.
