DEAR SIRS,

MY 2002 HONDA ODYSSEY SAT IDLE IN MY GARAGE FOR ABOUT 3 WEEKS AS MY FAMILY AND I WERE ON AN OVERSEAS TRIP. WE'RE BACK AND TODAY, WHEN THE ENGINE IS STARTED, I FIND OUT THAT THE RPMS ARE UNSTABLE, USUALLY IN THE PKING OR NEUTRAL TRANSMISSION POSITIONS, ALTHOUGH I HAD TO PRESS HARDER ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP WHEN NECESSARY WHILE IN THE "DRIVE" POSITION AS WELL. ALTHOUGH THE RPM'S ARE MORE STABLE WHILE DRIVING, THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. I CAN SEE THE RPM INDICATOR JUST GOING UP AND DOWN CONSTANTLY WITH NO CONTROL FROM THE DRIVER. THE VEHICLE MOTOR JUST ACCELARATES AND COASTS ALL BY ITSELF WITH NO DRIVER'S COMMAND, MOSTLY WHILE IDLE WITH THE MOTOR ON---JUST OUT OF THE BLUE. WHAT COULD THAT BE?

THE GENERAL ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OF THE CAR SEEM TO BE WORKING PRETTY FINE, AND I TRIED MANY THINGS, INCLUDING TURNING ENGINE OFF AND BACK ON, AFTER A LITTLE WHILE. PLEASE REPLY SOON AS PRECISELY AS POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO TRY TO FIX THE PROBLEM AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE, FOR ME, AT THE EARLIEST TIME. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO BE BETTER INFORMED ABOUT THE MATTER BEFORE I TAKE IT UP WITH THE LOCAL HONDA DEALER, HERE IN PANAMA CITY, REP. OF PANAMA.

FOR YOUR INFO, THE RECENT WORK THAT WAS DONE ON THIS CAR (DURING 2010) INCLUDES A MOTOR OIL CHANGES ETC, MULTIPOINT COMPUTER CHECKS, BRAKE CKS & CLEANINGS, A THROTTLE BODY CLEANING, SUSPENSION & TIRE WORKS, AND GENERAL BODY WORKS (DOOR REPAIRS, BUMPERS FIXTURES, BULBS REPLACING, ETC.). A RECENT DIAGNOSIS WAS A DRIVER AIRBAG SENSOR MALFUNCTION THAT LIGHTS THE "SRS" INDICATOR ON THE BOARD. IT IS NOT YET REPAIRED BECAUSE WE ARE WAITING FOR THE PART (APPARENTLY AN ELECTRONIC RESISTANCE ALREADY ORDERED) TO BECOME AVAILABLE, HERE.

THX & BEST REGARDS,

DAVID ESKE**** E.

Is the check engine light on? If yes have the codes read, unstable idle indicates an unmetered air leak, this can be from a vacuum leak, or a crack in the air intake tube from the air filter box to the throttlebody, check both. Or it can be caused by a malfunction EGR valve. Weak fuel pump, or clogged fuel filter.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS OFF. I WAS TOLD BY A LOCAL MECHANIC THAT IT COULD BE THE OXYGEN OR AIR SENSOR. BY THE WAY, WHAT IS THE EGR VALVEN YOU REFER TO?
