I CAN NOT SHIFT UNLESS I USE THE SHIFT LOCK RELEASE STEPS IN THE MANUAL. THEN ONCE I HAVE STARTED THE CAR IT RUNS GREAT. WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS?

2002 Honda Accord • 100,000 miles

It has no problem automaticly shifting while driving. While in park I can not completely compress the release button on the lever.

The shift lock out is a safety feature designed so that children can't pull the car into gear or neutral with possible catastrophic outcome. There is a solenoid connected to the brake light switch that releases the lock out, possibly the solenoid is out of adjustment or faulty, a faulty brake light switch can also cause this, get this checked out first.
