How do I determine the problem in steering?

A knocking /rattle in steering colomn. The steering seams to jam up, stick when not moving. Shimmy in front end at higher speeds.

This is something you need to have checked asap, being a safety issue.

A visual inspection is required and components to check would be the steering linkages, steering rack, u-joints and suspension components.
