Tapping noise (dont think it is a rod asked 8 local auto techs no clue)

I drove thru a stream and got water in my engine i took the valve covers off and removed the spark plugs water came out thru my spark plug holes. i sprayed wd-40 in the spark plug holes and put the vlave cover back on (the valves and rockers looked fine) the enigne will start but it is making a tapping sound. i do not think it is a rod because i turned the engine off and removed the spark plug wires and turned the engine over and the knocking sound was gone i replaced the spark plug wires and the knocking sound returned and sugestions?

Have a compression test done. Symptoms indicates a possible bent rod.

Without any load on the pistons, the noise might not appear.
