Have a Ford Focus engine speeds up when in nuetral or in gear by itself, whats wrong

Its been doing that but it will settle done. Last night it did not. Soundfd like I was going to drive into the house

Is check engine light on? What RPM range does it flux? Cold or hot? Any recent repairs?

Yes engine light is on. I cant see how many rpms its not on my dash if I did I am sure it would be close to being in the red zone. I only drive about 15-20 miles at a time, so it never gets real hot and its not cold when I start driving its in the middle
