changing from first to second does not feel as smooth as changing to other gears in my ford fiesta

There's a few possible causes for this, but having so little information, I can't really tell you much.
If there's a lot of miles on your tranny, then this will happen eventually anyway. Also, how old is your fluid/filter?? If it's really old, try changing it.
Also, solenoids can go bad sometimes, depending on the age.

Its a 02 model with 61000 miles.
I have only purchased the car last week (dont know a lot about cars'0
With regards to the fluid/filter not sure on the age all I know is the car has had a service every year.
