When you move the shift lever to reserve the reverse sensors will turn off. As long as it is in reverse you can not turn them back on.
This started out as an intermittent problem but now is all the time. No check engine light and no codes.
Rear bumper is clean and there are no obstructions like cargo carriers or anything.
Thanks for any help!

Some people call them back up sensors. There are four of them mounted in the rear bumper.

You must be referring to the Parking assistance sensors. It's going to be hard for you to do anything yourself without some very expensive equipment to see what the computer is seeing. There is a control module that operates that system and it communicate with the PCM to share info.

The reason I referred to the sensors as reverse sensors is because in 2002 when my Explorer was built Ford Motor Co. Called it a Reverse Sensing System. I do not know when the term. Was changed but that is what Ford used in 2002. They were a $255 option. Bet it cost more than that if I decide to have them fixed. LOL
