FIAT PUNTO TEMPERATURE GAUGE PROBLEM

2002 Fiat Punto • 98,000 miles

Whilst driving, the temperature gauge was normal around the half way mark. The heating was warm. Suddenly, the temperature gauge dropped to nil and the heaters started blowing cold air. Then a warning light appeared on the dashboard. It's the EOBO system engine control system light. What could this mean? Also, when I turned the ignition off, then fan kept going. I had been driving in a built up area for no more than 30 minutes at no more than 30mph.
