This afternoon, I was quoted a price of $268.40 for a tune-up (parts (incl. New spark plug wires) and labor by my local independent mechanic. The van is running fine, and the service is part of a regular maintenance schedule.

I don't know, but this price seems rather high to me. As it's a basic, maintenance tune-up. I know garages mark spark plug wires up an ungodly high percentage, but to the best of my recollection, I've never paid that much for this service. I know three plugs are at the back of the engine and difficult to get at, but I was thinking $150 tops.

Anyway, does this seem like about the going rate for a tune-up nowadays, or should I shop around?

Prices differs on location and it is always good to shop around to understand the going rate around your area.

Sounds ok to me. Different shops charge different labor rates. Maybe you can find somebody cheaper?
