I have a 2002 impala that has a slow take off then it drives normal. What could it be
I have changed the o2 sensor, did a oil change

i would look at the cat converter. it may be clogged.

I took it 2 a shop they said it was something with the transmission. If so how do you know if you need another transmission

you need to trust someones word that is checking it for you.
get a second opinion if it will make you feel more confident.
