My timing chain I think is broke does that mean I should get a new motor or what could be the prognosis. I have a 2002 Catera wanna find other variables that may save me some trouble

Could you perhaps have a 2001 Catera, there was no 2002 model, and it became a CTS in 2003. In either aspect, if you spun the timing belt(not chain), there was probably piston/valve contact resulting in bent valves. This does not mean you need a new engine, but the repairs are not cheap. Most circumstances require both cylinder heads to be removed, and sent out for repairs usually consisting of most, if not all valves be replaced. This can easily reach 2000-3000 dollars.
