2002 BMW 320 knocking from the rear

Hello, I have a 2002 bmw 320
my car drives fine, but when im in first gear an I am driving I hear like a knocking sound, it does it in second gear as well but never in third, its like a bolt has came of an when driving it is banging together, it doesnt do it all the time very annoying, usually when in third gear an the rest you wont hear anything? Can you help me please? Many thanks Aidan

Are you hearing this noise every time you are in 1st and 2nd? And you never hear it in other gears? If so I feel that the problem is located in the transmission, if it was drive line you would be hearing it ain every gear, I would get a mechanic to road test this car and listen to the noise first hand.

Its when im at low speed, feels like it below driver seat an back, I was thinking maybe the flex disc is gone? Feels like a bolt it came of some thing an is banging together when take of if you no what I mean?

May be worth getting the flex plate checked out, although you would normally experience some noise at higher road speed when you back off the throttle, it will not be easy to see in situe, the starter will have to be removed and the engine turned slowly by hand to view also check foe loose torque converter bolts.
